Catalogue Note

Charles Towne "of Liverpool" trained as a coach painter. He was taught to paint landscapes by John Rathbone and copied landscapes by Richard Wilson for Henry Blundell of Ince Hall. He copied Stubb's Harvesters and Reapers when they were exhibitied at Liverpool in 1787 and matured to specialize in shooting scenes, hunting pictures and landscapes.
