Catalogue Note

Agnes CarMichael (1774-1848) had two brothers, James and Charles who invented the reverse gear for the steam locomotive shortly after Stephenson unveiled the Rocket in 1829.  The brothers refused to patent the work however declaring it was an invention '...for the good of mankind...'
