Catalogue Note

The sitter had a distinguished military career. He took his seat in the Scottish Parliament 1649-50 and was one of the members sent to welcome the return of King Charles II in 1650. The sitter married three times. Firstly, Anna, daughter of Robert, Lord Balfour of Burleigh, by Margaret, daughter of Michael, 1st Lord Balfour of Burleigh. He married secondly Helenor, 1st daughter of John, 2nd Earl of Wigtown, by Margaret, daughter of Alexander, 1st Earl of Linlithgow. He married thirdly, Margaret, daughter of John Leslie, 6th Earl of Rothes, by Anne, daughter of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. He was succeeded by Margaret as Countess of Wemyss, his only surviving child by his third wife.
