Catalogue Note

Mary Sargant studied in Paris under Luc-Oliver Merson and at the Slade under Legros. She married Henry Smyth Florence, a musician, in 1888. She specialised in fresco painting and was a member of the Society of Mural Decorators as well as the NEAC.

This work, a rare oil by the artist, derives its subject from Dante Gabriel Rossetti's sonnet Love's Baubles.
