Catalogue Note

This classic mahogany writing table with ebony pegs was designed by Charles for his wife’s use. A peculiarity of the table is the curious arrangement of the stretchers. Using the ''cloud lift'' motif, each stretcher rises or falls from leg to leg. The adjoining stretcher then does the reverse, causing two stretchers to start from a high point and two from a low point. The resulting asymmetric effect was probably an intentional folly on Charles’ part.
