Catalogue Note
Correspondence between Charles and a lady friend in the 1890s records the fact that ''The Flying Dutchman'' was a project sadly left unfinished due to the demands of Charles and Henry’s growing architectural practice. In time it was completed and Charles made the oak frame himself. The painting was displayed in his homes in Pasadena and Carmel throughout his lifetime.
