Catalogue Note

During Prendergast’s 1898-1899 trip to Italy the artist visited numerous cities including Venice, Florence, Rome and the small Tuscan town of Siena, where he executed the present work. Viewed from La Lizza, a public park overlooking the town, Siena depicts a group of well-dressed girls and their fashionable mothers, set against a frieze of Italian architecture, with the campanile of the Palazzo Pubblico visible in the distance.
