According to D. Frederick Baker, the present work "is a portrait of the artist's first child, Alice Dieudonné Chase (1887-1971).  Chase completed several portraits of Alice, often referred to by her middle name Dieudonné.  The hat she is wearing in Portrait of Miss D recalls the so-called Pilgrim hat worn by the model in his early masterpiece, Ready for the Ride, 1877" (oil on canvas, 54 by 34 in., The Union League Club, New York).
