According to D. Frederick Baker, "It is likely a demonstration pieced painting while the artist conducted a summer class at Carmel By-the-Sea, on the Monterey Peninsula, California, June-September 1914. The signature type was generally used on demonstration pieces which were presented as prizes for the best work of students in a class."
