Dr. Kenneth Maddox writes that this "work was painted during the time the artist maintained a 29-room summer home, 'Aladdin,' near Warwick, New York, and I am confident that your composition was inspired by a scene near his property...Cropsey was fond of dogs and they frequently wander into his compositions.  The play between yellow, red and green foliage is often seen in paintings at this time."
