Catalogue Note

According to D. Frederick Baker, "While there are no auction or exhibition records for a painting with this title during the artist's lifetime, it is certainly possible that Chase exhibited the work under a different title or it was sold at auction with a non-specific (e.g. Portrait of a Man).  The work was painted in Munich, Germany, the year Chase returned to the United States, having completed his studies at the Royal Munich Academy.  However, the date on the painting appears to read 1898, surely a 'slip' of the brush."
