According to D. Frederick Baker, "This 'painting in pastel' was done during the first season of the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, Southampton, New York. Chase had been one of the original members of the Society of Painters in Pastel and is now recognized as one of the premire exemplars of the medium in the late 19th century."
