Catalogue Note
Marguerite Steen (op.cit.) describes how ''one day, when the acacias along the Mall were just beginning to show faint crimson traces of bud, we went into a little park adjoining the Museum, through which a school teacher was conducting a little flock of pupils, to whom she was giving a botany lesson. William had already started to paint, and from where we were sitting the voices of the teacher and the children came clearly.
'Premieres manifestations du printemps,' declaimed the teacher, pointing to some little tufts of green that had started to appear on the winter-frozen shrubs.
'Pre-mieres man-i-fes-tations du prin-temps,' piped the children obediently.
'That's the title of my picture,' said William, as he added the little row of children, in their pale frocks that looked like a border of spring flowers to the design on his canvas''.
