Catalogue Note

Moatlands is a house near East Grinstead, Sussex, which belonged to Mr & Mrs Cecil Harris, Hitchens’ most important early patrons. He painted there frequently in the 1930s and the ability to look over and again at a motif was to be a crucial element in his later work. The Moatlands paintings also see Hitchens making some of his earliest experiments with the panoramic view that could be read either as a whole or in distinct sections.
