Catalogue Note
Born in Yokosuka, Aoyama Yoshio began his art studies in 1911 at the Nihon Suisaiga Kenkyujo under OshitaTojiro. In 1925 he studied under Henri Matisse in France, while continuing to exhibit in Japan, where he returned in 1935. He is known for an expressionist style reflecting the light of the south of France. His work was the subject of a 1995 retrospective exhibition at the Chigasaki Museum of Modern Art.
