Catalogue Note

Born in Sapporo, Koyanagui Tadashi studied under Okada Saburôsuke and left for France in 1920. He became close friends with Foujita and Bando. In 1924, Ferdinande Barrey, Foujita’s then wife, left her husband and moved in with him.
His works were exhibited in the major Paris Salons from 1921 to 1929. Like Fouijta in 1921, Koyanagui was elected to the jury of the Salon d'Automne in 1923 and later to that of the Salon des Tuileries. His early works were influenced by Picasso’s Saltimbocca style, and later showed Foujita’s influence. He returned alone to Japan in 1937.
