Catalogue Note
Kotoku was a nephew of Kotoku Shusu, who was sentenced to death in 1911 for his subversive political activities. In 1905 they travelled to America, where Yukie began art studies at Los Angeles Art Institute. From 1918 he participated in art fairs, receiving the 1920 Los Angeles City Art Museum exhibition’s G.W. Robinson prize. In 1927 he came to France on a scholarship where he exhibited at major Paris Salons. He returned to Japan in 1929 where he continued to work, exhibit and teach until his untimely death in 1933.
In 2001 the Kochi Prefectural Museum arranged a major exhibition of his work.
