Catalogue Note

Born in Tokyo he founded the Sogetsu school of Ikebana. He is considered to be one of Japan's most important postwar avant-garde artists, both as a calligrapher, sculptor and painter. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1960 and the Geijutsu-Senzo Prize in Japan. His works can be found in major collections around the world.
