Description

relating to Lei Feng and to the 'Five Goods' Campaign

Catalogue Note

In 1963, Mao instructed the Chinese populace to "learn from Lei Feng".  Lei Feng, born in 1939 to a poor Hunanese peasant family,  was a young solder in the People's Liberation Army, who died in an accident in 1962.  His simple and undramatic life was a perfect example of selflessness and sacrifice, but Mao's attention to such cases of rural poverty also publicly reinforced his committment to the ordinary poor of China.
