Catalogue Note

The Marnyhac foundry exhibited a related bronze at the 1900 Universal Exposition which sold Sotheby's London, September 27, 1991, lot 20.  A related surtout de table sold Sotheby's New York, November 1, 2000, lot 246.  The present lot was presumably produced before Linke purchased the model -- and the reproduction rights -- in 1903.  Active from the 1860s through the early 1900s, the Marnyhac firm also cast works by Jean-Baptiste Clésinger, Amédée Charron, and Eugène Deplechin.
