Catalogue Note
As professor of landscape painting at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Art, de Haes was one of the most influential teachers of his generation. Amongst the many artists who studied under him were Jenaro Pérez Villaamil (see lot 210), Aureliano de Beruete (see lot 122) and Darío de Regoyos (see lot 112). Breaking with the teaching of his predecessors in the post, de Haes advocated the study of nature, steering his students away from the picturesque and toward realistic representation; urging them to record what they saw. Inspirational in his methods, as well as far reaching in his influence, de Haes arranged long painting tours for his students throughout Spain. Married in 1876, his own vision was clouded by the death of his wife one year later, the tragedy of which manifested itself in the moody landscapes of his latter years.
