Catalogue Note

Vaszary was an excellent colourist and his imaginative art, sensitive to modern trends, merits him an important place in the twentieth-century history of Hungarian art. It was in Paris as a member of the group The Eight and inspired by the artists of the Ecole de Paris that Vaszary developed his decorative style. His depictions of carefree seaside resorts were possibly a reaction to the horrors he witnessed during World War I at the Serbian front. His paintings of this period were typically executed with rapid, sketchy brushstrokes, boasting fauve colouring and adventurously truncated compositions, as evident in the present work.
