Catalogue Note

Vilmos Perlrott-Csaba started his artistic formation under Bela Ivanyi-Grünwald at Nagybánya. In Paris he studied at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière before becoming a pupil of Matisse. He participated in the Salon d'Automne of 1907 with the Fauves and also had solo exhibitions in Paris before returning to Hungary.

The present work, while not Fauve in style, is testimony to Perlrott Csaba's love of vivid, strong colours and the profound influence that the works of Matisse and Cezanne had early on in his artistic and aesthetic formation.
