Catalogue Note
Commissioned by Theodor Auspitz-Artenegg's father Carl to adorn the reception room of his Vienna town house, the Palais Auspitz, this and the following lot were originally part of a four-panelled decoration depicting scenes from Snow White. The other two panels, now lost, were painted by Makart's contemporary, Hugo Charlemont. Both of the Makarts found their way into Vienna's Historisches Museum soon after the 'Anschluss' in 1938, where they remained until their recent restitution to Theodor Auspitz-Artenegg's heirs.
