Catalogue Note
Seven Watercolours by Balthasar Wigand, the Property of a European Noblewoman
The following works by Balthasar Wigand, acquired by the family of the present owner around 1910, exemplify the work of this renowned Viennese miniaturist, both in terms of their quality, and (in the case of six) their Viennese subject matter. Wigand was much in demand as an artist during his lifetime, working in watercolour and goauche to produce the most exquisite and detailed pictures to fit in writing boxes, paperweights, and lampshades, or simply to adorn the homes of his many patrons.
