Johannes Franciscus Spohler Dutch, 1853-1894

The present lot, depicting the Zuiderhavendijk in Enkhuizen, is a copy after a famous town view of Cornelis Springer. Spohler admired this painter greatly. Springer executed his view of the Zuiderhavendijk (collection Rijskmuseum, Amsterdam) in December 1868. Out of admiration, Spohler executed a copy in his own typical style, creating a painting which can be regarded as a masterpiece in the oeuvre of this talented Dutch painter of townscapes.
