Catalogue Note

A pupil of Bidault and Van Spaendonck, Antoine Chazal taught iconography at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He exhibited flower paintings of an almost scientific precision at the Salon from 1822 to 1853. This exacting technique can also be seen in his watercolors of animals and his book illustrations.

Chazal exhibited a portrait of his child at Arras in 1838. As he painted few portraits, it is possible that the present work is that picture.
