Johann Bernard Klombeck, the most talented student of Barend Cornelius Koekkoek, specialized in fantastical forest scenes derived from careful observations of nature but not intended to show one specific site. Living to the age of seventy-eight, Klombeck was a leading member of the romantic school that flourished in Cleves in the nineteenth century.
