Catalogue Note

In 1896, Gervex began a series of oil studies in preparation for a monumental La Naissance de Venus, inspired by Alexandre Cabanal's work of the same title.  In each study, a crashing wave tosses a nude woman almost weightlessly across the surf.  Gervex exhibited the final version in the Salon of 1907 where it was purchased by the city of Paris.
