The coastal scene either depicts the popular beach of Étretat, where Courbet painted some of his most celebrated canvases, or the beach at Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, a small town on the Normandy coast where Courbet visited in August of 1867 as a guest of his affluent patron the pharmacist Fourquet.
