Catalogue Note

The motif of the animals in the foreground derives from compositions by Jan Brueghel the Elder and the Younger which are in their turn based on works by Frans Snijders (see K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Jüngere (1601-1678), Freren 1984, pp. 493-494, cat. no. 323, reproduced p. 174, fig. 70).

Sold with a photostat certificate by Prof. Dr. H. Zimmermann, dated 13 July 1962, stating this painting to be by Jan Brueghel the Elder (landscape), Jan van Balen (figures), and Paul de Vos (animals).
