Catalogue Note

rare. inscribed presentation copy. An account of the author's journey with the hajj in 1888 and 1891. Commissioned by the Egyptian government to undertake sanitary inspections whilst travelling with the hajj, Salih Subhi took the opportunity to take detailed notes of the pilgrimage and of the Holy Cities. In his opening remarks, he claims that his aim is to rectify the misconceptions engendered by European works on the subject ("ouvrages... fantaisistes, d'une autorité douteuse") and to submit "à l'approbation d'un public élairé une religion et un people méconnu."

The plates include views of Jeddah, Medina, Mekkah and the Mahmal. Some are after Sadiq Bey (1832-1902), the celebrated photographer of Mekkah and Medina.
