Catalogue Note

Coburn was born in Melbourne (Richmond) in the Eastern Townships and studied fine arts in Montreal and later at art schools in New York, Berlin, Paris and London. He finished his training in Antwerp where he married and then worked as an artist for twenty years. He returned to Canada in 1913 and set up a studio in Melbourne where he worked for the next forty years. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1920. He was inspired by the rural landscapes of the Eastern Townships and is best known for his paintings of horses and winter scenes such as the present work
