Catalogue Note
Red Rum is the most successful horse in the history of the Grand National. Owned by Mr Noel Le Mare, and trained by Ginger McCain at Southport, he became the first triple winner of the race in 1977. This followed victories the gelding's victories in 1973 & 1974. In the two intervening years he finished runner-up. The third win was achieved in facile fashion by 25 lengths, a winning margin that confirmed 'Rummy' was in a class of his own.
In the words of Reg Green, the Grand National historian, writing on the historic third triumph: 'Indisputably the King of Aintree, Red Rum gave new meaning to all that the Grand National had for so long stood for and in doing so, enriched the lives of all who were priviliged to witness his incredible performance on that bright spring afternoon.'
After his death, Red Rum was buried besides the winning post at Aintree Racecourse.
