Catalogue Note
A collection of the shorter works of Arrianus, with Greek-Latin parallel text. The larger map (after Ortelius, 400 x 470 mm.), bound in at beginning of text, belongs to the description of the Arabian Sea, but also shows the whole northern part of the Indian Ocean, as it was known in antiquity. It shows the east coasts of Africa, the Arabian peninsula, Persia, India, and the Malay peninsula, with Sumatra and Borneo. The smaller map (170 x 210 mm.) shows the Black Sea with its coasts and tributaries.
Included are several of the works of the Greek historian and philosopher, including his account of ancient Roman military practices, and his manual of Epictetus's moral philosophy. The commentaries are by Johann Scheffer, Hieronymus Wolf, and Johann Wilhelm Stuck.
