Christopher Gray remarks, "While there are a number of paintings that were executed in Martinique, there is almost no sculpture from that trip. The two things that Gauguin executed in the line of the decorative arts are a dagger and sheath and a bamboo brush holder decorated with designs burnt into its surface with a hot iron" (Gray, p. 25).
