Catalogue Note

This album of watercolours documents a late Nineteenth Century sketching journey through Italy, with beautiful polychrome watercolours of the ancient ruins which punctuate the Roman campagna.  Mostly made in 1972 and 1873, Coleman's watercolours record the poeple and animals of the Italian countryside, the huntsmen and ranchers with their ornamented horses, the mountain goats and the powerful buffalo. The album has been filled with diverse sketches by other artists, who may have been friends of Coleman met whilst he was travelling. The more notable are those by Poignedestre of Italian horse traders.

Henry Coleman specialised in painting Italian landscapes and divided his time between residences in Rome and London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889.
