Catalogue Note

The Battle of Balaklava took place during the Crimean War in October 1854. In this battle, the Russians attempted and failed to capture Balaklava, the Black Sea supply port of the British, French, and Turkish forces in the southern Crimea. Although the battle was an allied victory, there were heavy losses, as immortalised in Tennyson's poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade.' This incident took place on 25th October when, through a disputed error in orders, the Earl of Cardigan led an English light cavalry brigade in a hopeless charge on a heavily protected Russian position, and more than two thirds of his men were killed or wounded
