Catalogue Note
After leaving Malta in early April 1866 Lear travelled to Corfu, Dalmatia and Montenegro. The impressive scenery around the Bay of Kotore or Bocche di Cattaro on the Dalmatian coast inspired several sketches including the present work and, his diary describes, on 26th April how the road from Cattaro to Montenegro 'ended in cloud (and) it suggested a far more convenient and elegant ascent for the legend of Jacob's dream than the conventional ladder generally used...' (Ruth Pitman, Edward Lear's Tennyson, 1988, p.137)
