Catalogue Note

In the autumn of 1838, Callow made his first visit to Switzerland.  His return journey to Paris led him though Germany along the Rhine, from Rudesheim to Bingen, from where he walked to Bacharach and Pfalz, Oberwesel, the castle of Schonburg and St Goar.  There he crossed the river to see the Castle of Katz and, in his own words, 'proceeded along a path beside the river to Boppart' (see Jan Reynolds, William Callow, 1980, p.72).  He then travelled to Coblenz and finally finished his walking tour at Bonn
