Catalogue Note
The present watercolour shows a view of Buckingham House, the end of the Mall and the road to Constitution Hill from Green Park. It was drawn in circa 1825, just before the alteration of the building.
Buckingham House in St James's Park was designed by Captain William Winde, said to have been a pupil of Gerbier, and finished for John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham in 1705. It was then bought by George III and settled on Queen Charlotte. The original building was altered and added to from 1825 onwards until it quite disappeared, Buckingham Palace covering the site.
Another watercolour of Buckingham House from Green Park, drawn on a sheet of paper the same size as the present work, and signed and dated 1825, is in the City of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
