Catalogue Note

Bampfylde visited Southampton in the summer of 1770 on his way to the Isle of Wight (see Philip White, A Gentleman of Fine Taste, Exhibition Catalogue 1995, p.10). On 24th July he wrote to his friend, Edward Knight: 'We think of staying here (Lymington) till 10th/11th August & then propose going to Southampton' (letter to Edward Knight, 24th July 1770)
