Catalogue Note
Girtin and Turner were employed in the mid 1790's to make copies of works owned by Dr Thomas Monro. These copies were all small in size and were intended perhaps for publication and probably for Dr Monro, as many of them, like the present work, subsequently belonged to him. The majority were sold as part of his sale at Christie's on 26th June 1833, lots 80-83 (a total of forty items). Two of this series, of Knaresborough Castle and A Bridge possibly in Wales, each measuring 7.5 by 12cm, were sold in these Rooms on 8th November 1991, lots 102 and 103 for £5,000 and £6,000 respectively.
