Catalogue Note

Girtin visited the Cinque Ports, including Dover, in the summer of 1795 with James Moore.  Moore's portfolio from his trip included a large number of Girtin's drawings representing views of the neighbourhood.  It has also been suggested that Girtin may have visited Dover in the same year in the company of Turner and John Henderson, another of his patrons (see Jonathan Mayne, Thomas Girtin, 1949, p.33).

A pencil drawing by Girtin of Shipping at Low Tide in Dover Harbour was sold in these Rooms on 10th July 1997 and there is also a view of Dover in the Fitzwilliam Museum (no.757)
