Catalogue Note
The Black Doctor was foaled in 1848 by The Doctor out of Betsy Bird. He was owned and trained by John Osborne senior, the father of the famous nineteenth century jockey of the same name.
The Black Doctor, also known affectionately as Dr Negro, raced on forty-eight occasions between 1850-54, winning on seven occasions. The present picture is likely to commemorate The Black Doctor's victory in the Warwick Cup of 1851, when he was ridden by Hiett. The colt's other major victory came in 1852 when he won the Tradesmen's Cup at Manchester.
