Catalogue Note

This is one of the most popular of Henry Morland's nocturnal fancy pictures in which he captured figures on London streets, but only by the glow of candlelight. Others in the series include The General Post, A Servant Girl with a Candle and A Lady Reading by Candlelight. Morland was clearly influenced by seventeenth century Dutch models, but his choice of subject matter carried on the tradition of Philip Mercier.
