Catalogue Note

The sitters were three children of David Gordon (1753-1831) of Abergeldie Castle, Ballater, Aberdeenshire, and his wife Anne, daughter of Michael Biddulph of Ledbury.  The eldest son Charles (1790-1826) married Marian, daughter of Robert Phillips of Longworth, Herefordshire.  His brother Michael (1792-1860) married Caroline, daughter of the Reverend John Swete of Oxton House, Devon.  He succeeded to his father's estates in 1831.  Their sister Anne Penelope (1794-1868) was unmarried.

The French artist, Nicolas Ruyssen, taught drawing to the children of George III.
