Provenance

By family descent at Leslie House to Norman Evelyn Leslie, 19th Earl of Rothes, by whose executors sold, along with Leslie House, to Major Sir Robert Spencer-Nairn, Bt. in 1919, by whom given to the present owners in 1953 

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the only surviving child of David, 2nd Earl of Wemyss, by his 3rd wife, Margaret, daughter of John Leslie, 6th Earl of Rothes. She succeeded as Countess of Wemyss, in her own right, in 1679. She married firstly, Sir James Wemyss of Burntisland, County Fife, who was subsequently created Lord Burntisland.  She married secondly George Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Cromartie.  Her eldest son David succeeded as 4th Earl in 1705.
