Description
- Sir Godfrey Kneller
- Portrait of a lady
- erroneously inscribed on the reverse with the identity of the sitter
- oil on canvas
three-quarter length, standing in a landscape, wearing a blue dress and a red cloak, holding a King Charles spaniel in her arms
Provenance
Anon. sale, Christie's, 19th April 1963, lot 55, bt. Wyatt (as Jane Louise, 4th Countess of Huntingdon)
Catalogue Note
When this picture was sold in 1963 the sitter was identified as Jane Louise, 4th Countess of Huntingdon. On the basis of chronology alone this identification must be incorrect. It is possible, however, that the sitter is a daughter of Theophilus Hastings, 7th Earl of Huntingdon by his first wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Lewis, Bt. of Ledstone.
