Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Thomas More, the grandson of Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor during the reign of Henry VIII.  The family estate of More Hall, Hertfordshire, was confiscated following Sir Thomas's fall from grace and subsequent execution in 1535.  However, it was returned to the More family in the first year of the reign of Queen Mary.  The manor passed to Thomas Cresacre in 1603, on the occasion of his marriage to Elizabeth Gage, daughter of Thomas Gage and his wife, Elizabeth Guildeford.  In the eighteenth century the manor came to be known as Gubbens, a name that seems to derive from Sir Richard Gobion, who was Lord of the manor in the reign of King Stephen.
